Five Spice Beef with Broccoli

8 oz filet or rump steak
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 t finely grated ginger
1/2 t five-spice powder

2 T peanut oil
4 oz broccoli florets

1 t dark soy sauce
1/2 t salt
3/4 c hot water


2 t cornstarch
1 t cold water

Bunch of chives, snipped into 1" lengths
Cut steak into thin slices, then into narrow strips. Mix together with garlic, ginger, and five-spice powder. (You can pay a lot for the five-spice powder at Wegmans, or buy it for less at an Asian food store.)

Heat wok. Add 1 T of oil and stir fry broccoli over high heat for 4 minutes. Remove.

Add 1 T of oil and stir fry meat for 3 minutes.

Add broccoli, soy sauce, salt, and water and heat to simmering point.

Mix cornstarch with cold water and pour into wok, stirring continuously until liquid thickens.

Toss in chives, stir.
